The Discover More card is a poster child for the credit card industry’s highly complex and, at times, somewhat sneaky marketing. To the casual consumer, one that just reads bolded titles and doesn’t examine the fine print, the Discover More card could look like a 5% cashback credit card superstar. But alas, after delicate application of both spending caps and seasonally rotated categories, it falls well short of that aspiration.

The Bank of America Accelerated Rewards American Express credit card offers a respectable, but by no means jaw-dropping, 1.25 World Points per dollar spent. Since World Points can be redeemed in the form of cash back at a 1:1 rate (as long as you are careful! read on…), the card operates as the equivalent of a 1.25% cash back card.

The Capital One No Hassle Cash Rewards credit card is a fairly straightforward cashback credit card. It’s not an all-star card, but neither is it a laggard–somewhat North of middle-of-the-pack. One callout is that Capital One tends to tailor their offers based on your credit worthiness.

The Penfed Visa Platinum card might be called a hidden gem. The value proposition of this card is very straightforward: its awesome for gas rewards (5% cashback), very good for supermarket rewards (2% cashback) and plain Jane on all other purchases (1% cashback).

While this card ranks 2nd out of the 32 cash back credit cards that PlasticIQ currently tracks in our ranking engine, if the Blue Cash card is used properly and in a disciplined manner, it can easily be the top dog—-with potential to earn an affective cashback rate of 3% or even more.

The Discover Escape credit card (aka Escape by Discover) masquerades as a travel credit card, but is really a cash-back credit card with restrictions on how the cash back can be redeemed. Restrictions aside, this piece of plastic is a heavy hitter, and is PlasticIQ’s top-ranked cash back credit card when examined over a 3-year usage period.

If you just read some random Chase Freedom promotional materials, the Chase Freedom credit card probably seems like an amazing offer, paying a whopping 4% bonus cashback (on top of the base 1% cashback!) on rotating spend categories each quarter.
